Katie L. Bales, Ph.D. is a Postdoctoral Fellow and CVNR Investigator at the Atlanta VA. She attended the University of Georgia for her undergraduate studies and received a double major B.S. degree in Biology and Psychology. She went on to do postbaccalaureate research at Kennesaw State University and received her Ph.D. in Vision Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her mentors are Drs. Machelle T. Pardue and Jeffrey H. Boatright. Dr. Bales’s research interests target neuroprotective strategies to slow retinal diseases in order to preserve retinal function and the underlying molecular mechanisms involved. These studies include detection and treatment of early stage diabetic retinopathy and exercise-induced retinal neuroprotection in both basic science research and clinical studies.
