Firas Kobeissy is a Professor of Neurobiology at the Neuroscience Institute, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), and Associate Director of the Center for Neurotrauma, Multi-Omics, and Biomarkers (CNMB) in Atlanta, GA. He earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Florida, where he completed advanced training in neuroproteomics and biomarker discovery at the McKnight Brain Institute (MBI). Prior to joining MSM, he served on the faculty at the American University of Beirut. Dr. Kobeissy has established a recognized translational research program focused on traumatic brain injury (TBI), neurodegeneration, neurotherapeutics, and multiomics. His work has contributed to the discovery and clinical validation of FDA-cleared blood biomarkers for mild TBI, including GFAP and UCH-L1, and he has collaborated extensively with academic, VA, and industry partners to advance precision medicine approaches in neurotrauma. He has served on multiple NIH, Department of Defense, and Veterans Affairs review panels and advisory committees and is actively involved in national and international neurotrauma initiatives. Dr. Kobeissy also serves in editorial leadership roles in brain injury research.

Dr. Kobeissy’s research integrates multi-omics technologies, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, bioinformatics, and systems biology approaches to understand better the molecular mechanisms underlying traumatic brain injury, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, post-traumatic neurodegeneration, and neurological recovery. His laboratory has investigated the role of metabolic and environmental modifiers of TBI outcomes, including Western diet and high-fat diet exposure, and has pioneered studies examining mitochondrial-targeted therapeutics such as MitoQ and edaravone. Additional research interests include biomarker trajectory modeling, repetitive and blast-related TBI, post-traumatic epilepsy, and the application of AI-enabled and systems-level analyses for precision neurotrauma.
